About

Hello everyone, and welcome to My Writerly Life–squibs about literature, writing, and the people and things that inspire me. Let me tell you a bit about myself as a writer and college professor, and more about this blog.

I first started as a young reader–absorbing everything in my mother’s library, from Flaubert’s Madame Bovary to the Zane Grey westerns. I was particularly drawn to great literature, and to other art forms that deepen our human experience.

I formally discovered my innate writing skills in junior high, and published for years as a journalist. I had this dream of becoming a famous New York Times reporter, but alas it was not to be. Don’t we all have those bobs and weaves in our lives?

Sensibly, I switched to a Bachelors in Business, and a career as an exec and a consultant, but I continued to write–everything from strategic plans to a monthly column in a business journal.

Later I returned to college for a Bachelor’s and an MFA in Literature and Fiction. For my Master’s Thesis, I wrote Wrangle, a novel inspired by my uncle’s quarter horse ranch. The novel went on to earn a Will Rogers Medallion for western writing. In recent years, I have taught English composition and literature at a local college.

Wow, does that history make me seem really old, but I am actually a spry 86 and still drinking in this crazy world around us, and sharing my experience and insight with you.

This blog will be about all the things I love–great literature (classic and modern), the writing life, arts and culture. I’ll write about people and all the things that inspire me. I do hope you’ll come along for the ride, and add your experience and wisdom. I so look forward to meeting you.
